And The Answer Is... Posted by Elizabeth on August 26,2001:
Q: How much is Josette's Music Box worth?
A: There are two different Josette Music Boxes that have been made. The original one was made in 1970 by A.B.C. Merchandising Co. and Paul Randolph Associates and was only available through mail order. This music box is a plastic, cylinder-shaped replica of the music box used on Dark Shadows and House of Dark Shadows. The lid is removable and inside is a storage area. It was packaged in a white cardboard box with a picture of Barnabas. Above the picture are the words "Dark Shadows" listed in quotes and underneath it states "Josette's Music Box". Under the picture are the words, "© 1970 Dan Curtis Productions, Inc. Licensed by A.B. C. Merchandising Co.". I have also heard that the music box may have come in a plain white box or a box with the label, "Barnabas' Music Box" (which is how the mail-in order describes this box). I have not seen either of these two boxes, so I cannot verify this one way or the other. Since this box came out near the end of the series, there were very few sold. Unfortunately few copies have survived (it is not very durable). It retailed for $4.98. This box, mint in the box, can be seen anywhere from $250.00 to $500.00.
The reproduction music box was made in 1996 by MPI Media Group. This music box is almost identical to the original box except that the reproduction has the following copyright stamped on the inside bottom of the box:
Dark Shadows Josette's Music Box © 1996 Dan Curtis Productions, Inc. All Rights Reserved
This copyright is very difficult to read, I have found the best way is to shine a light through the bottom of the box while reading the inside. The cardboard box for the reproduction is very different. Barnabas and Josette (Maggie) from the House of Dark Shadows are seen on all four sides of the box. Above the picture are the words "Dark Shadows" and under the picture are the words "Josette's Music Box" and "© Dan Curtis Productions, Inc. Distributed by MPI Media Group". I am not sure how much the box originally sold for, however it is now worth $40.00 to $60.00.
